Gothic Mirrors

EU09_LEN0320_M-FB1Gothic style originated in 12th-century France and lasted through the 16th century during the high and late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was followed by Renaissance architecture.  Its characteristic features include arched windows and entries., vault ceilings, castle towers, and flying buttress.  Decorative elements like porches were often arched or pointed as well as dormers, and roof gables.

Gothic architecture is commonly found in buildings such as cathedrals, abbeys and churches.  In Europe, Gothic architecture is more evident in grand castles, palaces, town halls, and universities.

The Gothic Revival style in America was advanced by architects Alexander Jackson Davis and especially Andrew Jackson Downing, authors of influential house plan books, Rural Residences (1837), Cottage Residences (1842), and The Architecture of Country Houses (1850).
