Suspending Wall Mirrors

If you have ever lived in a condo, or an apartment, you know how little space there is, and how storage can be of supreme importance when configuring your living space. One thing which helped my husband and I to best make use of our cramped space was to create a wall using curtains which was then used to hide our storage which made our apartment look cluttered. We didn't own the condo we were renting, so building a framed wall was out of the question. To best achieve this additional storage space you will need a wall that has no windows and ideally will allow the curtain panel to run from one side of the room to the other in a straight line. Most rooms have a back wall which has a rectangular space which can work perfect for this space solution. The best thing about this design, is that it just shaves off a little bit of space.

Ideally it would be nice to have a curtain panel that matches your walls color, which would give your room a seamless look. Today with paint match technology, you can get a curtain panel of your liking and paint can be effortlessly matched in color. When I had rented a space in a antique mall, I used curtains to create a rectangular space, which was shared with other tenants. The bookshelves they provided was supposed to create a partition, but overall looked quite clumsy. I bought some white long fabric which I cut according to size and taped off a rectangular horizontal stripe on the fabric, and painted in between the tape lines. This then allowed me to line the stripe up with the wall, and complete the stripe on the existing walls, which made my overall space look well constructed.

One way of hanging curtains from the ceiling is to use a rod bracket which is bolted into the ceiling, and used in a combination with drapery rods. This is likely the most inexpensive option, and then could be additionally used to hang light weight wall mirrors from. Depending on the weight of the curtain, and the mirror, you will want to be sure that your rod, and bracket can handle the weight.

Another option for an extended curtain rod is the 36" Ceiling Support w/ Flange. If you are working with extra tall ceilings, this support might be the better option. The closer to the ceiling the better, but for extended ceilings, this curtain support bracket may be the better choice.

The nice thing about Global Industrials Wall Partition is the slider which allows you to pull the curtains effortlessly compared to loops on curtains which often stick. If you are more building inclined, these Ceiling Brackets by A & Fmay be perfect to notch into a 2 x 4, which then could be bolted to the ceiling and around the walls to create more of a permanent storage opening. The wood could then be painted to match the wall and the drapes. They are sold in a set for 8 dollars.

If you feel as though fishing line wouldn't hold your mirror, consider an extension hook which you often see in museums, or galleries. A hook grabs on to the ceiling or wall rod which is positioned with the ceiling or wall bracket. If your brackets are very secure, and bolted well, you shouldn't have any problems with any weight put on them. Ideally this is the most luxurious choice when it comes to this design. This Extension Hook is 48' long which works at most art or mirror heights. It sells for 8 dollars each, and can be spray painted gold, black to match with your wall mirror. Glamos sells a pack of ten heavy duty hooks for around 20 dollars. So instead of paying 8 dollars for one hook, pay 20 for 10 hooks. Depending on the extension size you may need, they can be located under amazon under hook extention
