Jane and Michael deFlorio don’t do anything by half measures. The couple,researched 45 homes before purchasing their five-story fixer-upper on the Upper East Side. Before bringing in the expert renovators and designers, the couple spent numerous weekends meticulously planning their gut renovation. “We’re the obsessive couple,” Jane admits. “We both get into it.”

Decorator Celerie Kemble, architect Marina Lanina, and contractor Felix Flit—came on board, the DeFlorios had assembled a 50-page presentation outlining their plans. Their details even included how many handbags that Jane owns, the heights of her boots, and the hanging measurements of their clothing. They also had collected 500 inspirational images of interiors, furniture, and art, to gather ideas.

The renovation was extensive. The interior was completely rebuilt into a home that combined classical architectural elements with modern amenities such as air-conditioning and an elevator. The renovation easily could have taken two to three years, but was completed in just 15 months.

Having small rooms can be very confining, especially when those rooms look as small as they feel. While there are some methods you can use to make the room look bigger, perhaps one of the most effective is using mirrors. By properly placing one or several mirrors in key areas, you can make a room look much brighter and larger. Here are eight of the best ways to use mirrors to increase the size of a room.

Group Them
By grouping several mirrors on one wall, you can create an organized look that increases the size of the room. The group of mirrors tend to look large, especially if you get mirrors that have somewhat thick frames. For this to work, you need to get mirrors that have the same frame color. If one or more mirrors are a different color, then the eye will be drawn only to the frame, and not the entire group. This can make the room look smaller, especially if the two colors are opposites. You just need about three to five mirrors for this to work.

Kitchen Mirror
By making the kitchen a brighter place, you can easily make the room much larger. One of the darker places is behind the stove. While the mirror may collect a residue from cooking, you just need to clean the mirror once or twice a day to keep it looking good.

Cabinets
By gluing some mirrors to the front or top of cabinets, you will make the room much brighter. This can be achieved by using mirrored tiles. This is best for those extra small rooms that really need a boost.

Corners
You will need a long and skinny mirror to pull this off. Put the mirror in one of the corners of the room, but turn it on its side. This will take the reflection of the wall, and it will lengthen this. This causes the entire room to look lengthened. For the best effect, do this to two or more sides of the room, as this will create a uniform lengthening that the eye will catch.

Floor Length Mirrors
These are very long mirrors, but they definitely work to increase the size of a room. While you can place a floor length mirror on any wall, it is best to place it behind either a grouping of furniture or objects. This will cause the entire room to feel taller by increasing the size of the wall, and it will bring in a lot of extra light, so beware of windows. You don’t want too much light to come into the room.

Fake Windows
Windows are capable of making a room look larger, but getting windows installed in a room without any windows is more trouble than it’s worth. However, you can take four small or two medium mirror tiles and group them like a common window. This will cause the room to take on extra light, as if there was a window, and the room will increase in size.

Dark Walls
Some rooms have one darker wall, and this often create a sense of depth within the room. This can be augmented by just placing a mirror on that darker wall. It will work with the color, and it will greatly augment this feeling of depth. Placing it towards the middle often does this the best, but you can use the sides, too.

Cover the Wall
This method may be a little drastic and expensive, but you can cover one wall entirely in mirrors to increase the size of the room. Since you will be seeing the other side of the room when looking at the mirrors, it will appear as if the room has doubly increased in size. Unlike the grouping section at the top, this is best with mirrors that don’t have frames.

Conclusion
Mirrors can be used to great effect to help improve the size of a room. By properly placing just a few mirrors, you can improve the light coming into the room and you can artificially increase the size of the room. Try one of the eight methods above, and your room should be looking much better in no time.

If you have ever lived in a condo, or an apartment, you know how little space there is, and how storage can be of supreme importance when configuring your living space. One thing which helped my husband and I to best make use of our cramped space was to create a wall using curtains which was then used to hide our storage which made our apartment look cluttered. We didn't own the condo we were renting, so building a framed wall was out of the question. To best achieve this additional storage space you will need a wall that has no windows and ideally will allow the curtain panel to run from one side of the room to the other in a straight line. Most rooms have a back wall which has a rectangular space which can work perfect for this space solution. The best thing about this design, is that it just shaves off a little bit of space.

Ideally it would be nice to have a curtain panel that matches your walls color, which would give your room a seamless look. Today with paint match technology, you can get a curtain panel of your liking and paint can be effortlessly matched in color. When I had rented a space in a antique mall, I used curtains to create a rectangular space, which was shared with other tenants. The bookshelves they provided was supposed to create a partition, but overall looked quite clumsy. I bought some white long fabric which I cut according to size and taped off a rectangular horizontal stripe on the fabric, and painted in between the tape lines. This then allowed me to line the stripe up with the wall, and complete the stripe on the existing walls, which made my overall space look well constructed.

One way of hanging curtains from the ceiling is to use a rod bracket which is bolted into the ceiling, and used in a combination with drapery rods. This is likely the most inexpensive option, and then could be additionally used to hang light weight wall mirrors from. Depending on the weight of the curtain, and the mirror, you will want to be sure that your rod, and bracket can handle the weight.

Another option for an extended curtain rod is the 36" Ceiling Support w/ Flange. If you are working with extra tall ceilings, this support might be the better option. The closer to the ceiling the better, but for extended ceilings, this curtain support bracket may be the better choice.

Louis XV ruled as King of France from 1 September 1715 until his death on 10 May 1774. Unexpectedly surviving the death of most of the royal family, he came to the throne at the age of 5 and ruled with the help of his uncle, until his 13th birthday were he took formal control of government.

Research has suggested that he was very intelligent and dedicated to the task of ruling one of the largest areas of Europe, but many claim his lack of morals, and his inability to reform France lead to him to be amongst the most unpopular kings of France. He cherished his private life, and eventually married in 1725 to Marie Leszczynska, Princess of Poland where they had eleven children. During the time of Louis XV, a style surfaced which was called Rococo. Drawing from the previous baroque styles, the style was rich but with restraint. Furniture often featured inlaid work of various spectacular woods, metal, mother-of-pearl, and ivory. Lacquered chinoiserie also made its first appearance. The decorative techniques during this period were fabulous as ornamentation appeared everywhere from the architecture to the arts and every scale of design.

Baroque Style is a style that originated from the catholic church around the 1600's in Italy. Baroque style is often seen as high impact, dramatic and theatrical in design. Gowns were bigger, clothing was decked out with ornate details and the best materials were used. Baroque styled interiors were filled with geometrical patterns, decorated walls with relief and stucco-work (ornamental plaster), as well as being heavily ornamented. Free-standing biblical sculptures were designed to instruct, and encourage conversion while being a beauty for the eye. Instead of the straight lines, baroque style was curved and elaborate. Designs were often large-scale, and spaces became more complex, as the dramatic light and shade details were used to create a shock and awe. It didn't stop at just interiors, the ornateness followed through to the furniture, architecture, clothing, and art.

Gothic style originated in 12th-century France and lasted through the 16th century during the high and late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was followed by Renaissance architecture. Its characteristic features include arched windows and entries., vault ceilings, castle towers, and flying buttress. Decorative elements like porches were often arched or pointed as well as dormers, and roof gables.

Gothic architecture is commonly found in buildings such as cathedrals, abbeys and churches. In Europe, Gothic architecture is more evident in grand castles, palaces, town halls, and universities.

The Gothic Revival style in America was advanced by architects Alexander Jackson Davis and especially Andrew Jackson Downing, authors of influential house plan books, Rural Residences (1837), Cottage Residences (1842), and The Architecture of Country Houses (1850).

The sunburst mirror is a great contemporary piece that commands attention in any room. Sunburst mirrors are making a comeback, as these vintage sunburst mirrors struck popularity in the 60's and 70's. Federal and Empire Style came about in America in between 1780-1850 which was heavily influenced by England's regency styles and Frances empire styles. Both the Regency and Empire Style is focused on Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian tones which are incorporated for a government empire influence. In America the eagle symbol of the new federal government became a popular motif. Federal style incorporates the neoclassical influences of Hepplewhite and Sheraton including straight and delicate lines, inlay and contrasting wood veneers. Characteristics include slender legs, very delicate decoration, and symmetry. Many doors and entrances are often framed by columns and framing over the door. Ancient Greek influence became apparent in all design from architecture to furniture styles and interior design.

Scottish Neoclassical architect Robert Adam transformed a new style in England that we know as Neoclassicalism. In 1758 he teamed up with brother James Adam and focused focused on designing complete schemes fully decorated and furnished. Although palladian design was popular in Adams time, he brought forward elements of classical Roman design alongside Greek, Byzantine and Baroque styles, which shaped the architectural style of his time. His most famous designs are said to be based on Etruscan vase decorations. He is considered by many to be the greatest architect of the late 18thcentury, and his work influenced the development of Western architecture, both in Europe and in North America. In North America, the Federal style owes much to neoclassicism that Adam shaped.

The trumeau mirror originated in France during the 18th century and are as popular today as they were then. Trumeau mirrors were intended to hang on the wall between windows providing a decorative element to the wall as well as serve a purpose of bringing in more light. Most antique trumeau mirrors are found painted, as the style of most homes during the 18th century homes were painted in rich faux work with ornate plaster frieze that ornamented the walls.

The trumeau mirror is quite easy to identify, as it is most often rectangular in design. The size of the mirror was dependant on the size of the mantle or the width of the wall on which the trumeau hung. Trumeau mirrors are designed where the bottom portion is the mirror itself, while the top is generally decorative. The lower portion of a trumeau is always a mirror, and placed behind a candle and served the purpose of bringing in more light in dimly lit homes. Homes were not wired for electricity, so any way of bringing in light which extended the hours of daylight was a necessity. The upper portion of a trumeau contains a relief carved design, a painting, or a second mirror.

You can pick up a inexpensive reproduction from the 50's and paint it to look like an antique. A genuine antique trumeau can fetch from $2,000.00 to more than $20,000.00, depending on the age, size, complexity, and style. Today trumeaux mirrors are often featured in magazines over vanities and mantels, on walls in entry ways,and halls.
